Static vs. Dynamic

Not all QR codes are built the same.

Most “expired” QR codes didn’t expire. A service in the middle was switched off.

Static QR code

What we make
  • Stores the final content — your link, text or Wi-Fi details — directly in the pattern.
  • Needs no QR provider to keep a redirect running.
  • No platform-imposed expiration date.
  • The content can’t be changed after it’s generated. Make a new code instead.

Dynamic QR code

What subscriptions sell
  • Usually stores a short link to the provider’s server, which then redirects.
  • Lets you change the destination URL later.
  • Can count scans and collect scan data.
  • Often stops working if the subscription ends or the provider shuts down.

Every QR code generated here is static. It will never expire because of us.

To be precise: a QR code itself has no expiry date. But if it contains a link, the code is only as good as that link — if the website goes offline or the domain lapses, the code will still scan but lead nowhere. That part is up to whoever owns the link.

Manifesto

The internet doesn’t need another QR code subscription.

A QR code is a pattern of squares. The math behind it is public, the standard has been free to use for decades, and generating one takes your browser a few milliseconds.

And yet somehow you can pay a few dollars to “create” one, print it on 5,000 menus, and only later learn that it was a rented redirect. Stop paying, and your menus stop working. That isn’t a product. It’s a hostage situation with a pricing page.

So here’s the deal. No paywall. No account. No trial that turns into a bill. No tracking pixels in your codes. Nothing between your customer’s camera and your content.

  1. 01

    Free means free.

No paid tier, no limits, no watermark, no “pro” styles.

  2. 02

    No middleman.

Your content goes straight into the code. We are not in the loop, ever.

  3. 03

    No data.

There is nothing to collect. Your input never leaves your browser.

  4. 04

    Yours to keep.

What you make belongs to you. Use it anywhere, commercially or not.

  5. 05

    Boring on purpose.

Basic internet tools should be simple, reliable and available to everyone.

Created out of spite. Kept free out of principle.

FAQ

Straight answers.

Do QR codes expire?

No. A QR code is just a pattern that stores data — there’s no clock inside it. A static code like the ones made here works for as long as its content is still useful. If it holds a website link, it works as long as that website is online. Codes that “expire” are dynamic codes whose provider stopped running the redirect behind them.

Is QRCode666 really free?

Yes. No paid plan, no generation limits, no download limits, no watermark, no sign-up and no credit card. The site is a set of static files, which costs very little to host. There is nothing to upgrade to. If you want to say thanks, donate to UNICEF or the World Food Programme instead — we’re not affiliated with either and receive nothing.

Can I use these QR codes commercially?

Yes. Put them on packaging, menus, flyers, business cards, ads or anything else. No attribution needed — the codes you generate are yours. (“QR Code” is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED, which lets anyone use the technology freely.)

What happens if QRCode666 shuts down?

Nothing happens to your codes. They contain your content directly — not a link to us — so they don’t depend on this website at all. You’d only need another tool to make new ones. The source code is MIT-licensed, so anyone can host a copy.

Can I edit my QR code after downloading?

Not the content — that’s the trade-off for not depending on anyone. To change it, generate a new code. Tip: if your destination might change, encode a URL on a domain you control (like yourbrand.com/menu) and update that page, or set up a redirect on your own site. You keep the flexibility without paying a QR company.

Do you collect my data?

No. Codes are generated by JavaScript in your browser. What you type and any logo you add never leave your device — the page’s security policy even blocks it from making network requests. There are no accounts, analytics, ad trackers or cookies. The one thing we count is how often each donation link is clicked — per organization, day and page language, with nothing that identifies you. Like any website, our host (Cloudflare) processes standard technical data such as IP addresses to deliver the page. Your browser stores only your language and theme choice, plus whether you’ve seen the intro this session.

Which error correction level should I use?

Higher levels let a code survive damage, dirt or a logo, but make it denser. M is a good default. Use H when adding a logo (we switch to it automatically), and L only when you need to squeeze in a lot of data.

Is it safe to put my Wi-Fi password in a QR code?

The password is stored in the code as plain text, so anyone who can scan it can read it. That’s fine for a guest network you’d share anyway. Don’t post a code for a private network somewhere public.
